Planning an Alcatraz, Muir Woods and Sausalito tour from San Francisco? These answers explain how the schedule works, what is included, and how to get the most from this full morning experience.
The tour starts with hotel pickup in Downtown San Francisco and Fisherman’s Wharf around 8:00 am. You first cross the Golden Gate Bridge, visit Muir Woods National Monument for about 1 hour 20 minutes, then spend around 1 hour in Sausalito. After that the coach takes you to Pier 33 for the early afternoon ferry to Alcatraz Island. You return to San Francisco on your chosen ferry back from Alcatraz in the mid or late afternoon.
Tour prices can vary by season and date. At the moment, tickets usually start around $159 for adults and $136 for kids, but the final rate for your travel day is always shown in the Book Now section at the top of this page before you complete your reservation.
Yes. This Alcatraz and Muir Woods tour includes the official Alcatraz ticket, round trip ferry from Pier 33, and the award winning cell house audio tour. You do not need to book Alcatraz separately. Tickets are linked to your name and are non refundable once confirmed, which is why we recommend checking your travel dates carefully before booking.
The ferry crossing to Alcatraz takes about 15 minutes each way. Most visitors spend 2 to 3 hours on the island, walking through the prison, listening to the audio tour, and exploring the grounds and viewpoints. Your ticket allows you to return on several afternoon ferries, so you can choose how long to stay as long as you board one of the scheduled boats back to Pier 33.
Yes. Your tour already includes the Muir Woods entry fee and timed reservation, as well as parking permits. There is no need to book any additional shuttle or ticket. You simply walk into the park with your guide and enjoy the redwood trails during the allocated visit time.
In Muir Woods most guests follow the main boardwalk and wide forest paths, which are mostly flat and easy. On Alcatraz there is a steep hill from the dock to the prison building and several flights of stairs inside. Allow for a moderate amount of walking and standing. Comfortable closed toe shoes are strongly recommended for the forest trails and the historic prison site.
Hotel pickup is offered from selected locations in Downtown San Francisco and Fisherman’s Wharf. Your exact pickup time and meeting point are listed in the confirmation voucher and in the reminder sent the day before the tour. After the coach drops you at Pier 33 for Alcatraz, you return on your own to your hotel once you come back from the island.
Families are welcome on this small group tour. Children can visit Muir Woods, Sausalito and Alcatraz Island, but strollers must be lightweight and easy to fold to fit on the vehicle. The main trail in Muir Woods is generally stroller friendly, while some side paths and parts of Alcatraz have slopes and stairs. Please provide the ages of all children when booking so we can arrange appropriate seats and safety belts.
The standard schedule includes about 1 hour in Sausalito before continuing to Pier 33 for the Alcatraz ferry. Most guests follow the full itinerary, but if you would like to stay longer in Sausalito or skip Alcatraz, talk with your guide at the start of the tour. Any extra time or transportation by taxi, ferry or rideshare would be on your own and not included in the tour price.
Weather can change through the day. We suggest layers, a light waterproof jacket, and comfortable walking shoes. The redwood forest is often cool and damp, while Sausalito and the Alcatraz ferry can be breezy and sunny. A small daypack, reusable water bottle, sunscreen and a fully charged phone are useful. Large luggage is not allowed on the vehicle or on Alcatraz Island.
Alcatraz tickets are limited and the best Alcatraz and Muir Woods tours from San Francisco often sell out, especially on weekends and in high season. We recommend booking several weeks in advance for popular dates and at least a few days ahead for weekdays. Last minute spaces may be available, but cannot be guaranteed.
This morning tour is perfect if you want to combine Alcatraz, Muir Woods and Sausalito in one day without adding city sightseeing. If you prefer Alcatraz plus more time in San Francisco neighborhoods, consider the Alcatraz + San Francisco City Morning Tour. Travelers who want a full day redwoods and Wine Country experience can look at the Muir Woods & Sausalito Tour with Wine Country.
